Your wedding invitations will help set the tone for the entire event. You can follow strict etiquette rules for a really formal do, or go with something fun if you’re planning a more casual event.
Wedding invitation wording etiquette is mostly based on historical practices but today many couples choose to do things in their own way. Here are some general tips that will help you decide how to word your invitations;
Informal or Casual Wedding Invitation Wording
The most common change to wedding invitation wording for a more casual and modern feel is the indication of who is hosting the event as well as the inclusion of the reception details and or rsvp details on the invitation. Here are some example of wedding invitation wording that is modern and more informal.

Formal or Traditional Wedding Invitation Wording Variations
Planning a formal wedding? A truly traditional invitation set consists of an invitation, reception card, reply card, and envelopes. The invitation will invite guests to your ceremony, while the reception card will tell them about the celebration to follow. If you’re following tradition and the bride’s family is paying for the wedding, the invitation will be issued by the bride’s parents, as below
Erin and James Dawson
request the pleasure of the accompany of
Peter and Jo
at the marriage of their daughter
Karla Jane
to
Samuel Daniel Stone
Saturday Sixth September
Two Thousand and Fourteen
at Three in the afternoon
Custom's House
Brisbane City
Note also the use of middle names and the writing of numbers in word form, this is common for this level of formality. If the groom's parents are listed to then in this style they would be included after the groom's name with the phrase- son of Jack and Ann Stone.
If both parents are hosting then their names should be placed at the beginning of the invitation.
Mr and Mrs John Simpson
and
Mr and Mrs Patrick Williams
request the honour of your company
at the wedding of
Corinne Elizabeth
to
Paul Bradley
Saturday Fifth October
at four in the afternoon
Saint Ann's Catholic Church
Roseville, Sydney
Generally the phrase the honour of your presence is traditionally used for wording wedding invitations in places of worship whilst the pleasure of your company is suitable for other venues.
Of course every invitation is unique and these are merely suggestions. We would love to create a sample for you of your wedding invitations. Please drop us a line to get started. xx
